fruzsina eordogh Oh, the horror! Google is so evil it’s making everyone use its stupid social network. As the Wall Street Journal pointed out earlier this week, Google+, the social network all about the circles, is now inescapable. Besides Google employees being forced to use it (and now bitching about using it to the Journal), YouTubers, companies, restaurant reviewers – anyone, really, that wants to maintain a presence on the Internet – has to use Google+ in some capacity. Heck, anyone who signs up for Gmail gets connected to Google+.And because it is so inescapable – we’re not going to stop using Google products any time soon – it’s about time digital citizens bucked up and learned to accept Google+ and all of its weird Circle-y, ad-free ways. After all, there are some benefits to using Google+. Besides being ad-free, Google promises to never sell your individual Google+ information to advertisers, and by using Google+ you make the ads we all see across other Google properties better. (At least that’s what Google claims.) So, yes, we have to put up with email integration and having to sign into the service to write restaurant reviews, but that doesn’t mean using Google+ has to be all doom and gloom.YouTube Leads The WayPerhaps we should take our cues from YouTube, the video-sharing mega-site and community that was the first Google property to begin Google+ integration in late 2011. Sure, users kicked and screamed via online protestations just like all the other Google service users are doing today, but it seems that after all the fuss, many YouTube users actually kind of like Google+.Jamie Spicer-Lewis, a young up-and-coming cartoonist on YouTube with more than 24 million views of his works, doesn’t like that he has to enter his Gmail address instead of his username to get into his YouTube account, but “other than that it seems functional and useful.”Spicer-Lewis doesn’t actually use Google+, though, except for Google Hangouts “with my mother because she has a ChromeBook and can’t get Skype.” Artist, teacher and YouTuber Merrill Kazanjian thinks Google+, particularly Google Hangouts, is “historic.” Kazanjian says he has held several Google Hangouts on his YouTube channel and some of them have received “more than 2,000 comments from artists from all around the world.” “The impressionists had cafes in Paris,” writes Kazanjian, and “YouTube artists have Google+ Hangouts.”Cameron Magruder, a sports vlogger (video blogger) and winner of YouTube’s Next Vlogger competition in 2012, thinks Google Hangouts will be “a major player in the next 3-5 years especially within colleges and universities.”Magruder actually likes using Google+, and writes that it reminds him of “Twitter when it first started” because “none of your friends are on it so you have to seek out conversations.” With fewer people involved, Magruder writes, he is more attentive to the people he is following so he can respond to everyone. “I expect it to change in the coming years… especially as Facebook ramps up on more ads,” adds Magruder. (And as more people give up fighting Google+ integration, no doubt.)Gaining More VisibilityThe most obvious reason YouTubers are using Google+ is, of course, the fact that their profiles now show up on the top right hand side of the screen. “Google shows no signs of changing course and from a user perspective there are a lot of upsides to integration,” writes Michael X, the founder of YouTube analytics site VidStatsX, such “as better discovery and promotional opportunities.”Better “discoverability” and promotional opportunities equates to what shows up first in Google search: a YouTube user’s Google+ profile. Companies and anyone living online would be wise to do this, too. Why waste first-class advertising space, after all? Michael X admitted in an interview that he strongly dislikes Google+, but adds that given how forcefully Google is making everyone use the service, “it’s best just to give it time and make the best of the integration.”So take a hint from the YouTube community and stop with all the complaining. Embrace Google’s wacky social network already. There is nothing you can do about it, anyway. QSST went into the final as favourite after taking out the previous three NYC titles, while NSWCCC went into the final after causing an upset over New South Wales Combined High Schools in the semi final. The opening five minutes was tight, with both teams showing great talent and intensity. But it was the Queensland girls that impressed early and it didn’t take long for that to show on the scoreboard. Captain Emily Reed led by example in the 8th minute, when she crossed for her team after a CCC error, to score the first touchdown of the match. CCC was quick to hit back however, with Sinead Bailey scoring in the next set of six to level the game at one touchdown a piece. Emilee Cherry scored over in the far corner after she was set up by Kate McCarthy following a penalty to take the lead for QSST again. NSW captain Alicia Quirk was dangerous in attack throughout the first half but the team was unable to capitalize on their opportunities, to trail at the half-time break, 2-1.Strong defence by CCC kept them in the game early in the second half, but it was QSST that made their mark on the scoreboard, when Kate McCarthy crossed to give her side some breathing space.Anna Hicks was over for QSST not long after off the back of some great attacking play by QSST, to take their lead out to three touchdowns. Lauren Rynehart hit back for CCC two minutes later, after a great run by Quirk, to bring the NSW side back within two. It was short lived however, with Alysha Tupua scoring in the next set of six to take QSST’s lead out to 5-2. The NSW girls didn’t give up, scoring with just under two minutes remaining to bring the deficit back to two touchdowns. It was too little too late, however, with QSST taking back to back titles and going through the championships undefeated. McCarthy was rewarded for her strong game, being named Player of the Match, while Quirk was named Player of the Series. The two captains were full of praise for their respective team’s performances over the past week.“I couldn’t be more proud you, you are a good bunch and you did amazing all carnival, to Peta (Rogerson – QSST coach) you’re a deadest inspiration to all of us, I couldn’t ask for a better coach,” Reed said. “To my girls, I couldn’t be more proud of you, to make the grand final was such an awesome effort and you did yourselves so proud all week,” Quirk said.

After hibernating all winter, bears will soon be looking for food, and Nova Scotians are being asked to make sure they are not sending the message that residential communities are a good place for bears to feed. “More than 450 nuisance bear situations were reported last year. Sightings decreased compared to the previous year and with continued co-operation, we can further reduce the number of problem bear situations,” said Department of Natural Resources Minister David Morse. “Bears have the potential to be dangerous and destructive. We must all help in the prevention of bear encounters.” Department staff investigate problem bear situations and consistently find that food odours attract bears to the area. Storing garbage inside or in metal bear-proof containers, and keeping your barbecue grill clean and grease-free are just some of the things that can prevent bear encounters at your home or cottage. While there is an abundance of natural foods, bears will search far and wide, following food odours into backyards. Bears are attracted to garbage, compost, green bins, pet food and bird feeders. There are specific precautions home and cottage owners, campers and hikers should take to reduce the likelihood of attracting bears. To find out how to prevent bear incidents and what to do when seeing a black bear, visit the Natural Resource’s website at www.gov.ns.ca/natr/wildlife/Nuisance/bears.htm . Bear sightings in residential communities and near homes should be reported to the Department of Natural Resources. Trained staff will determine the appropriate action. London: Afghanistan’s World Cup preparations were thrown off kilter when they controversially decided to replace successful captain Asghar Afghan with the little-known Gulbadin Naib two months before the tournament. Under Asghar, Afghanistan had made serious progress, beating Bangladesh and Sri Lanka at last year’s Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates and even tying a game with India at the tournament. Asghar was confident his spin trio of Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Mohammad Nabi could dismantle any team once they had a fighting total on the board. Also Read – We don’t ask for kind of tracks we get: Bowling coach ArunSeven months later the skipper was unceremoniously dethroned, upsetting matchwinners Rashid and Nabi weeks before only Afghanistan’s second appearance in the global 50-over showpiece. “With just months to go for such a mega event like the World Cup, changing the captain will cause uncertainty and also team morale will be affected,” said Rashid, who was made Twenty20 captain. “Asghar should remain as our team captain. His captaincy is highly instrumental for team success.” Also Read – Bastian Schweinsteiger announces retirement, could join Germany set-upFormer captain Nabi supported Rashid’s views publicly on social media. “I don’t think it’s the right time to change the captain before the WC. The team has gelled really well under Ashgar & personally feel he is the right man to lead us,” tweeted Nabi. Afghanistan’s former coach Kabir Khan said the change could have a negative impact on the team. “The change is political,” Kabir said. “Had they wanted a change, it should have been done after the World Cup. “I feel the change will definitely affect Afghanistan as both Naib and Asghar will be under pressure.” Kabir, who oversaw Afghanistan’s swift rise as a force in international cricket, is confident that despite the upheaval, the Afghans will not lose their battling qualities. “I don’t think their fighting spirit will be any less but a new captain will find it tough,” he said. With the return of fast bowler Hamid Hasan, Afghanistan’s attack has more venom. But their hopes lie with Rashid, Mujeeb and Nabi, who have been the key men in recent years, helping Afghanistan make it through the qualifying competition in Zimbabwe last year. Rashid, ranked third in the ODI bowlers’rankings and number one in Twenty20 internationals, grabbed 14 wickets and Mujeeb claimed 16 scalps as Afghanistan edged through despite a scare. But to allow their spinners to wreak havoc, Afghanistan, who face Australia in Bristol on June 1 in their tournament opener, need to put challenging totals on the board. The emergence of dashing opener Hazratullah Zazai will add firepower at the top of the order alongside stocky Mohammad Shahzad, dropped from the 2015 World Cup for being overweight. Zazai smashed six sixes in an over in the Afghanistan Premier League (APL) in 2018 and hit the second-highest score in T20 internationals of 162 not out — including 16 sixes — against Ireland in February 2019. Asghar, Hashmatullah Shahidi, Najibullah Zadran, Samiullah Shinwari and Nabi form a strong batting line up but must adjust to unfamiliar English conditions. The first task though for the new captain will be to rally the troops after the change in command.
The passage of the National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill in the Lok Sabha on July 29, 2019, will always be a black day in India’s healthcare history. No doubt the Medical Council of India (MCI) had lost its credibility, more so after the exposure of corrupt practices by its then-president Dr Ketan Desai. There were several reports of the connivance of some higher-ups in the medical council with the private medical colleges. This had caused disenchantment among the concerned persons in the medical fraternity and civil society, who had demanded to revamp the body. They had also submitted suggestions to the government on this point. There was a need to take effective measures to correct the wrongdoings in the medical council. But the NMC tabled in Parliament and passed in a hush-hush manner is fraught with several negative implications in the coming period. Also Read – A special kind of bondThe MCI was essentially a democratic body with representatives from medical fraternity through elections as well as representation from various state bodies. The National Medical Commission, on the other hand, has 80 per cent appointed members with no space for democracy. They are likely to be puppets of the government in future. Any decision of the NMC could be thwarted by the government. This is killing the autonomy of such a prestigious constitutional institution as has been done with several other organisations in the recent past. The NMC is totally bureaucratised and centralised body with powers to forcefully implement regulations in the states without considering the interests of the state. This will kill the concept of federalism of the country. Also Read – Insider threat managementThe whole exercise is to give free hand to the private sector in medical education because the government will have fee regulation of only 50 per cent seats. Rest would be left to whims of the management of the private medical institutions. The central government will reserve the right to grant permission to the medical colleges without minimum requirements not considering the opinion of the NMC. Another totally unwanted clause is the introduction of the National Exit Test (NEXT) for the MBBS graduates form medical colleges in India. This will put those students who have cleared the MBBS exam to unnecessary burden before getting a license to practice. Graduates who have already cleared the exam are denied to sit for the second attempt to get PG seat. Moreover, no second chance to improve marks to get a better PG seat for those who are yet to take the final year exam will be allowed. Marks of one time will be criteria for PG admission lifelong. Since the NEXT will be clubbed with Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE), chances of Indian graduates getting PG seat will be reduced manifold. The clause of compulsory meetings with councils of AYUSH to develop an interdisciplinary curriculum is nothing short of moving towards bridge course. The parallel entry to practice modern medicine via a new cadre of community health workers will bring down the standard of healthcare and lead to undesirable practices. Foreign citizens will be allowed to practice in India without any conditions, regulations or license. This, in the long run, will put our population at risk through the involvement of various multinational pharmaceutical companies. There were many expectations as the health minister is a doctor himself. Passage of such a bill under his nose raises finger as to the ideology working behind. This bill has to be opposed tooth and nail with an appeal to the parliamentarians in the Rajya Sabha not to toe the party line but to keep eyes open in the wider interest of the countrymen. (The views expressed are strictly personal)

So, you’re looking to boost interest in a nice piece of hardware that’s been overlooked because of a competitor’s product? Just cut its price by 60%, like RIM has done with the BlackBerry PlayBook. Still not satisfied with the results? Why not get the people who work for you to help evangelize the darn thing and get as many out into the wild as you can. That’s got to be what RIM is thinking, dangling $99 PlayBook tablets to its employees just in time for the biggest gift-giving season of the year. Pick up a slate for your mom and dad, the kids, or even your co-workers for the big staff holiday party. At half the price they’re selling for to the general public, RIM is no doubt going to sell plenty of PlayBooks to its employees — many of whom are probably now banging their heads on their desks for having bought one earlier this year. It’s yet another HP-copycat move. Just recently, HP announced that it had one final batch of TouchPads inbound, but that they were earmarked for sale to employees only — also for just $99.RIM is clearly making a push to swell the PlayBook ecosystem and drum up some developer interest. Chris Wade’s already interested enough, having publicized the first PlayBook root last night. As good as this news is for RIM employees, it looks as though Best Buy is ready to wash its hands of the under-loved tablet. Online orders placed for the PlayBook are now beign cancelled according to user reports in the company’s forums, though refurbished 16GB models were still available for $149.You can’t blame Best Buy for the move. They also put a good deal of effort into the TouchPad, only to have HP inexplicably pull the plug on it after barely a month on retail shelves.via Business Insider, The Verge
Last month, word started to spread that AT&T was throttling customers with unlimited data plans after only 2GB. It didn’t require an academic study to conclude that something fishy was going on, but that didn’t stop wireless analysis firm Validas from conducting a study of its own to get to the bottom of it.Validas (who sells wireless bill analysis to help customers save on their monthly bills), analyzed data from AT&T and Verizon bills, and determined that the difference in data usage between the top 5% of unlimited data users and the top 5% of limited data users was minimal. In the case of Verizon, unlimited data customers actually used less data than capped users did:It’s a fascinating study, which confirms what most of us had already surmised: that throttling of unlimited data customers is simply a ploy to convert them to (sometimes more expensive) capped data plans. It’s probably no coincidence that the reports of AT&T’s unlimited throttling at 2GB popped up right after the company introduced its new (more expensive) data plans. John Cozen, the blogger who initially reported the throttling, was paying $30 per month for his “unlimited” data, the same as what capped customers pay for 3GB of data. He gets throttled at 2GB, but they enjoy 3GB of high speeds. So, surprise surprise, AT&T was capitalizing on the assumption that unlimited customers are data hogs who forgo a home broadband connection and use 100GB of wireless data per month. The results of this study show that there is no basis for this discrimination in throttling — and unlimited data customers are getting the shaft. As aggravating as it is to see the customer-hostile policies that carriers like AT&T get away with, hats off to Validas for coming up with some solid numbers to call them out on it. It would be nice to think that AT&T would have to either present some contrary evidence or renege on its throttling, but, as it will continue to rake in the dollars either way, we wouldn’t advise you to hold your breath on that one.More at Validas, via BGR
