So, you’re looking to boost interest in a nice piece of hardware that’s been overlooked because of a competitor’s product? Just cut its price by 60%, like RIM has done with the BlackBerry PlayBook. Still not satisfied with the results? Why not get the people who work for you to help evangelize the darn thing and get as many out into the wild as you can. That’s got to be what RIM is thinking, dangling $99 PlayBook tablets to its employees just in time for the biggest gift-giving season of the year. Pick up a slate for your mom and dad, the kids, or even your co-workers for the big staff holiday party. At half the price they’re selling for to the general public, RIM is no doubt going to sell plenty of PlayBooks to its employees — many of whom are probably now banging their heads on their desks for having bought one earlier this year. It’s yet another HP-copycat move. Just recently, HP announced that it had one final batch of TouchPads inbound, but that they were earmarked for sale to employees only — also for just $99.RIM is clearly making a push to swell the PlayBook ecosystem and drum up some developer interest. Chris Wade’s already interested enough, having publicized the first PlayBook root last night. As good as this news is for RIM employees, it looks as though Best Buy is ready to wash its hands of the under-loved tablet. Online orders placed for the PlayBook are now beign cancelled according to user reports in the company’s forums, though refurbished 16GB models were still available for $149.You can’t blame Best Buy for the move. They also put a good deal of effort into the TouchPad, only to have HP inexplicably pull the plug on it after barely a month on retail shelves.via Business Insider, The Verge
Last month, word started to spread that AT&T was throttling customers with unlimited data plans after only 2GB. It didn’t require an academic study to conclude that something fishy was going on, but that didn’t stop wireless analysis firm Validas from conducting a study of its own to get to the bottom of it.Validas (who sells wireless bill analysis to help customers save on their monthly bills), analyzed data from AT&T and Verizon bills, and determined that the difference in data usage between the top 5% of unlimited data users and the top 5% of limited data users was minimal. In the case of Verizon, unlimited data customers actually used less data than capped users did:It’s a fascinating study, which confirms what most of us had already surmised: that throttling of unlimited data customers is simply a ploy to convert them to (sometimes more expensive) capped data plans. It’s probably no coincidence that the reports of AT&T’s unlimited throttling at 2GB popped up right after the company introduced its new (more expensive) data plans. John Cozen, the blogger who initially reported the throttling, was paying $30 per month for his “unlimited” data, the same as what capped customers pay for 3GB of data. He gets throttled at 2GB, but they enjoy 3GB of high speeds. So, surprise surprise, AT&T was capitalizing on the assumption that unlimited customers are data hogs who forgo a home broadband connection and use 100GB of wireless data per month. The results of this study show that there is no basis for this discrimination in throttling — and unlimited data customers are getting the shaft. As aggravating as it is to see the customer-hostile policies that carriers like AT&T get away with, hats off to Validas for coming up with some solid numbers to call them out on it. It would be nice to think that AT&T would have to either present some contrary evidence or renege on its throttling, but, as it will continue to rake in the dollars either way, we wouldn’t advise you to hold your breath on that one.More at Validas, via BGR

DONALD TRUMP’S SPOKESMAN has denied that the US president refused to shake hands with German Chancellor Angela Merkel as they sat side-by-side in the White House last week.“I don’t think he heard the question” posed by Merkel when she suggested they shake hands, in full view of press cameras, spokesman Sean Spicer told German weekly Der Spiegel. The quote was translated into English from Der Spiegel’s online German website. Concerns about neglect and safety at Vancouver’s Water Works Park have galvanized the city and four neighborhood associations to work together to clean up, drive out crime and organize family-friendly events at the 20-acre park.Leaders from Central Park, Maplewood, Rose Village and Fourth Plain Village neighborhood associations have formed the Central Park Activities Committee to spearhead the action plan. Residents from Harney Heights also are participating in the effort. The committee’s long-range vision involves a series of improvements, including adding or improving park amenities and hosting family-friendly entertainment. Committee members have set a meeting for Feb. 6 with city employees to discuss some of the committee’s proposals.“They’re really motivated to clean up the park and make it a more family-friendly place, which is wonderful,” said Jessica Antoine, an outreach coordinator with the city’s Urban Forestry department.Despite persistent rain, 43 volunteers participated in a Jan. 17 event the committee organized to clean up the park, which is located at Fort Vancouver Way and Fourth Plain Boulevard in the Central Park neighborhood, said Central Park resident Colleen Neel. Volunteers worked two-hour shifts picking up litter, removing plant debris and scrubbing down memorial plaques and other park features. Meanwhile, the city provided garbage bags and containers to dispose of yard debris.

Related Content Image courtesy of Imago Systems July 7, 2009 – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Hologic Inc.’s premarket approval (PMA) application for the Adiana permanent contraception system. The Adiana system is designed to provide women a minimally-invasive, non-incision alternative to traditional, surgical means of permanent contraception. In January 2009, Hologic received CE marking approval for the Adiana system and commenced marketing and sales of this product in certain European countries. During the Adiana procedure, a slender, flexible instrument is passed through the body’s natural openings to deliver a low level of radiofrequency (RF) energy to a small section of each fallopian tube. A tiny, soft insert, about the size of a grain of rice, is then placed in each fallopian tube in the location where the energy was applied. During the three months following the procedure, the patient continues to use temporary birth control while new tissue grows in and around the Adiana inserts, eventually blocking the fallopian tubes. At three months, a special X-ray test (called a hysterosalpingogram or HSG) is performed to confirm the fallopian tubes are completely blocked and the patient may begin relying on Adiana for permanent contraception. The Adiana permanent contraception procedure is minimally invasive, requires no incisions and can be performed in the comfort of the doctor’s office using local anesthesia. Patients are normally able to return to work or resume their daily activities within one day. In contrast, traditional methods of permanent contraception, such as tubal ligation, require more invasive surgical procedures, usually are conducted in a hospital under general anesthesia and typically require four to five days of recovery. As a result, these more invasive surgical procedures can pose serious risk of complications, including anesthesia-related problems and damage to organs or blood vessels. There were approximately 70,000 female transcervical contraception procedures performed in the U.S. last year.1 For more information: www.hologic.com FacebookTwitterLinkedInPrint分享 Technology | Breast Biopsy Systems | July 24, 2019 Fujifilm Releases Tomosynthesis Biopsy Option for Aspire Cristalle Mammography System Fujifilm Medical Systems U.S.A. Court rules for AP in reporter impersonation document fight by Jessica Gresko, The Associated Press Posted Dec 15, 2017 9:26 am PDT Last Updated Dec 15, 2017 at 10:00 am PDT AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email WASHINGTON – A federal appeals court has sided with reporters in a court fight over documents that began after an FBI agent pretended to be an Associated Press journalist while investigating bomb threats at a Washington state high school. When the ruse became public in 2014, the AP and a press freedom organization attempted to get government records about the case and any other times FBI agents have impersonated journalists. After initially getting no records from the FBI, the AP and Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press sued. Though some documents were produced, the organizations argued that the agency’s response was inadequate. In an opinion issued Friday, a unanimous three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit agreed. Judge David Tatel wrote for himself and colleagues Brett Kavanaugh and Laurence Silberman that the FBI “failed to demonstrate” that it conducted a search “for the requested records, using methods which can be reasonably expected to produce the information requested.” The opinion reverses a lower court ruling in favour of the government that the FBI had “conducted a good-faith, reasonable search.”The appeals court sent the case back to the lower court. The FBI will have to search for additional records located in the office of the FBI’s director and better explain how it conducted its overall document search, said Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press lawyer Katie Townsend. She said her organization was “obviously really pleased” with the decision. The lawsuit stems from a 2007 investigation into bomb threats emailed to Timberline High School in Lacey, Washington, which is near the state capital of Olympia. As part of the investigation, an FBI agent communicating with a suspect in the case portrayed himself as an AP reporter. The agent sent the suspect a link to a fabricated AP news article, a link that when clicked allowed the FBI to pinpoint the suspect’s location. After the FBI’s actions came to light in 2014, resulting in an outcry from the AP and other news organizations, both the AP and the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press submitted records requests to the government under the Freedom of Information Act. The organizations asked for additional information about the Timberline High School incident, information about other instances where the FBI impersonated a member of the news media, and information about policies or guidelines governing the FBI’s impersonation of members of the media. After getting no records, the organizations sued in 2015. The government ultimately turned over about 190 pages of records, more than half of those pages with redactions.___Follow Jessica Gresko on Twitter at http://twitter.com/jessicagresko

it" he said "That is a big key"The legislative session began in January with Republicans taking stronger control of the House and getting a one-vote Senate margin mostly due to a strong electoral showing in rural Minnesota Still Democrat Mark Dayton remains the governor and has a strong motivation to fight for his pet projects because the budget being passed Tuesday night and Wednesday morning is his lastGreater Minnesota has become a political battlefieldDemocrats have alleged that Republicans did not serve rural Minnesota well as they controlled the House in recent yearsLess than two weeks ago Rep Rod Hamilton R-Mountain Lake accused the Dayton administration of "waging a war on agriculture" and a few days later other Republicans said the governor was not treating greater Minnesota wellWhile details of all bills were not final Tuesday afternoon May 23 several signs of compromise were easy to spotTake for instance changes farmers demanded to the 2-year-old law the requires them to place vegetative buffer strips between cropland and water That is a Dayton signature conservation law and he said he would veto any delay or change in itHe eventually agreed to the GOP-proposed plan to give farmers an eight-month "waiver" in meeting the law not using the term "delay" He also agreed to other relatively minor changesIn the tax bill Marquart mentioned many Republicans long have wanted to hold steady or reduce Local Government Aid to cities and County Program Aid A deal among Dayton and legislative leaders left increases for both accounts less than I want" Dayton said "You give and take"Here is a look at some of areas of special interest to greater Minnesota with changes still possible:EnvironmentEnvironment-related spending and policy changes come in a lot of bills but the most discussed issue has been buffers"The buffer stuff is huge" House Environment Chairman Dan Fabian R-Roseau saidDayton upset a lot of farmers when he began pushing for a law passed in 2015 to require buffers between water and cropland While he had GOP support for the measure Republicans did not like how it was progressing and the law was changed in 2016 and they returned this year demanding that the enactment be delayed a year and other changes be madeThe governor would hear none of it and said the bill had to remain the same until next yearBut Fabian said farmers are in the field now and "alternative practices" other than planting buffers have not been finalized and farmers will not be able to do the work needed by the Nov 1 deadlineThe compromise legislation allows farmers to apply for an automatic waiver that means they will not need buffers or alternative measures installed until July 1 2018 That gives farmers 11 months to comply with the lawSeveral bills contain money to help farmers and local governments meet the buffer lawThe bill also narrows the list of what can be considered public waters which Fabian said under existing law could be a puddlePlus the environment bill increases several Department of Natural Resources fees including day passes to state parks from $5 to $7 and annual park passes from $25 tro $35Parks especially small ones in rural Minnesota are being neglected Fabian said so more money is neededSome fees were requested by those who pay them such as the snowmobile registration jump from $30 to $105 more than 60 projects including nearly $20 million for the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program that can be used to help install buffersThe "legacy" sales tax increase voters approved in 2008 will amount to nearly $530 million with $211 million going to clean water $105 million to outdoor heritage and $90 million to parks and trails The rest goes to arts and culture projects More than $20 million of the clean-water fund is to be used by local soil and water conservation districts for buffersTaxesOne of the biggest issues in farm country is that schools find it tough to finance new facilities because the repayment burden falls heavily on ag property taxesThe tax bill agreement includes a provision to eliminate 40 percent of school construction taxes from farmland School but 80 percent of voters opposed it The same happened with nearby Barnesville and Detroit Lake schoolsMarquart said a DGF committee he was on decided to try to bond issue again but only if the state approved the tax credit in the billAlso in the tax bill is more than $100 million in income tax cuts for Minnesotans’ Social Security benefits Since greater Minnesota has a higher percentage of older people the move is expected to help the area outside the Twin Cities more than in the more populated areaMany Democrats fought a Republican plan to lower statewide property taxes on businesses’ first $100000 of value but it is in the billMarquart said that move will help small businesses around greater Minnesota because their facilities often have lower property valuesAgricultureOne of the easiest budget bills to pass often is one funding agriculture programs but nothing was easy this yearAfter much haggling and compromising the ag bill eventually passed easilyAg programs will get nearly $5 million more than expected in the next two years mostly for department administration In all the Agriculture Department will receive $105 million from the $123 million bill with the Board of Animal Health and Agriculture Utilization Board Institute getting the restDayton and Republicans argued over whether farmers had to get prior state approval before applying some pesticides Negotiations resulted in a language compromise accepted by both sidesThe Dayton administration gave up on its proposal to increase a pesticide fee on farmers but accepted one for non-agricultural waste pesticide productsSenate Agriculture Chairman Torrey Westrom R-Elbow Lake said $850000 that will be used to partner with local communities to control the spread of noxious weeds is important It will be are among the hottest issues during a legislative session but not in 2017The most-discussed item was the "stand your ground" measure that would have allowed more freedom to use deadly force in self defense But that did not make it into a final bill"The 2017 legislative session was adjourned last night without a single dangerous gun bill being passed—or even being voted on" the Protect Minnesota anti-gun organization wrote to members Tuesday "This is an amazing accomplishment in a year when the ‘gun rights’ party is in control of both the House and the Senate"One provision clarifies that off-duty law enforcement officers would be allowed to carry guns into private establishments although the owners may ask for credentials to verify the person is an officerA nearly annual debate has been decided at least for now A bill awaiting the governor’s signature prohibits the state from banning the use of lead shot State officials wanted to ban hunters from using lead shot in southern and western Minnesota an attempt to keep wildlife from being poisonedThe state’s 12000 muzzle-loader hunters will be able to use sights on their weapons Hunters also may add blaze pink to their hunting
