Terrorism: SA ‘remains vigilant’

first_img30 September 2013South Africa’s Ministry for State Security says it continues to work with countries, not only in Africa but the rest of the world, to share critical information about terrorism threats.“Terrorism is a global phenomenon which all countries take seriously, and as countries we partner to share information to thwart potential threats of terror,” spokesperson Brain Dube told SAnews on Monday. This follows reports that Samantha Lewthwaite, dubbed the “White Widow”, is suspected to be behind last week’s bloody Westgate Mall terror attack in Kenya. The 29-year-old British woman allegedly used a South African passport under the name Natalie Faye Webb to enter Kenya. The passport, which was obtained using fraudulent supporting documents, was later cancelled following an investigation by South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs.Dube, who said he cannot comment on external claims regarding the country’s intelligence, said South Africa does its own assessments based on national interests which form the basis of state security.“As government we remain vigilant and take these incidents seriously.” However, he could not detail the nature of the government’s continuing investigations due to their sensitivity. The four-day siege in Nairbobi last week left more than 60 people – including a South African, James Thomas – dead and over 170 people injured. About 15 suspected Al Shabaab terrorists have been detained by the Kenyan government.Although the Kenyan government has not officially or directly linked Lewthwaite to the attack, Interpol has issued a red notice for her arrest, urging all 190 member countries to assist in tracking her down and arresting herSource: SAnews.gov.zalast_img read more

Wiping the Slate Clean

first_imgIt’s a funny thing the way our little corner of the universe is organized. Each day the earth makes one complete revolution on its journey around the sun—and us with it. Each morning when we wake up, the prior day is forever lost to us. It’s almost as if by design we were given the ability to call for a do over. Like somehow, it’s necessary.Every year at just this time, we complete another trip around the giant star in the center of our solar system. The year that we are leaving is also forever lost to us as we enter the New Year. This annual journey is another opportunity to call for a do over. The past is forever lost to us. The future is unknown. All we ever really have is this moment. But we do step into that moment with all the knowledge and the experience we gained yesterday. We step into the new sunrise a little bit wiser and a little bit better prepared than we were the day before. We greet the new horizon armed with all the knowledge we gained from our victories, the lessons and scars from the battles we lost, and on the whole, better prepared. We’re better prepared to try again. We’re better prepared to try something new. We’re better prepared for the adventure that is tomorrow. And we’re better prepared to wipe the slate clean and start over. You can’t carry your victories with you; those battles have already been fought and won. You can’t carry your losses with you either. You can’t refight those battles. All you can carry with you into the future is the wisdom that you gained from the ride you took on this small rock circling around the giant star in the center of our little corner of the universe—and all of the relationships you’ve developed on your journey. If you need to wipe the slate clean, wipe it clean. Tomorrow is a brand-new day.And the day after that is a brand-new day too, should you need it.Make it a Happy New Year! Essential Reading! Man Utd team news & likely line-up vs Watford

first_imgManchester United Man Utd Team News: Injuries, suspensions and line-up vs Watford Kris Voakes Man Utd Correspondent Last updated 1 year ago 17:50 11/28/17 FacebookTwitterRedditcopy Comments(1) Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Man Utd v Brighton, 17/18 Getty Images Manchester United Premier League Watford v Manchester United Watford Everything you need to know ahead of the Premier League clash at Vicarage Road on Tuesday evening It was another zero-sum weekend for Manchester United as they edged past Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday only to watch on as Manchester City regained an eight-point hold at the Premier League summit with a 2-1 success at Huddersfield Town 24 hours later. As a result, Tuesday’s trip to Watford is just the latest game which feels like a must-win occasion for Jose Mourinho’s side.United 6/1 to win 1-0United’s poor form between the October and November international breaks has given their Manchester rivals a significant advantage at the top, but the returns of the likes of Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Marcos Rojo and Marouane Fellaini have at least stabilised the Reds in recent weeks. Article continues below Editors’ Picks Lyon treble & England heartbreak: The full story behind Lucy Bronze’s dramatic 2019 Liverpool v Man City is now the league’s biggest rivalry and the bitterness is growing Megan Rapinoe: Born & brilliant in the U.S.A. A Liverpool legend in the making: Behind Virgil van Dijk’s remarkable rise to world’s best player But, with a trip to Arsenal to come on Saturday, this feels like a key week coming up for United and Mourinho will feel that nothing less than three points at Vicarage Road can prop up their fading hopes of winning the Premier League title.MAN UTD INJURIES Eric Bailly and Phil Jones were United’s main absentees at Old Trafford on Saturday as Brighton were beaten 1-0, but the Ivorian should be back in contention for the trip to Watford even if Jones is likely to be unavailable until at least the weekend.Zlatan Ibrahimovic has now made three substitute appearances since returning from an ACL injury and could be considered for a first start, while Marcos Rojo should be considered for another 90-minute appointment following his full return from a similar injury against Basel last Wednesday.Michael Carrick has stepped up his training in recent days following a procedure to deal with an irregular heart rhythm but is not expected to return to play for the time being at least.Eric Bailly Jan Vertonghen Manchester United Tottenham Premier LeagueMAN UTD SUSPENSIONS Neither team are missing any players through suspension, nor do they have anyone sitting on the verge of a ban ahead of Tuesday’s clash.MAN UTD POTENTIAL STARTING LINE-UPAs is often the case with Jose Mourinho and short turnarounds, there could be a number of changes from the side which saw off Brighton, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic primed for a first start since April. That could mean a change in role for Romelu Lukaku, who has shifted to a wide position in the last few fixtures following the Swede’s entrance as a substitute.Elsewhere there could be changes at full-back, with at least one of Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young stepping aside and Daley Blind, Matteo Darmian and Luke Shaw all standing by. At the heart of the defence, Marcos Rojo and Eric Bailly may both return, potentially giving Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof a midweek off.Henrikh Mkhitaryan will be pushing for a return after being left out of three consecutive starting line-ups due to poor form, while Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford will likely be back to fighting over one starting spot after two successive league games in which they have both been given the nod.Man Utd possible XIWATFORD TEAM NEWS Marco Silva’s side are coming off the back of confidence-boosting back-to-back wins over West Ham United and Newcastle United as they gear up to face a United side they beat 3-1 at Vicarage Road last season. Before those successive victories they had gone down to three straight losses in what was by far their most disappointing run of the season so far.The Hornets have been one of the most impressive sides in the Premier League this term, with the form of Abdoluaye Doucoure and Richarlison in particular helping them build a five-point gap ahead of ninth-placed Brighton and the multitude of teams aiming to put daylight between themselves and the relegation zone.Nathaniel Chalobah, Craig Cathcart and Isaac Success are all still out with long-term injuries for Silva, who has been the subject of interest from Everton of late, but the Portuguese manager has no fresh worries as United prepare to visit.Abdoulaye Doucoure WatfordBEST OPTA MATCH FACTS Watford have lost 12 of their last 13 games against Manchester United in all competitions, winning the other in the Premier League in this exact fixture last season (3-1). The last Watford goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet against Manchester United in a competitive fixture was Tony Coton; in a 1-0 win back in September 1986 at Vicarage Road. Manchester United have lost their last two Premier League away games; 1-2 at Huddersfield Town and 0-1 at Chelsea. They haven’t lost three successive league away games since January 1996. Watford’s 21-point tally from 13 games is their joint top-flight record at this stage of a season, tied with their best-ever league campaign; when they finished 2nd in the 1982-83 season (also 21 points after 13 games). Despite taking charge of both Hull City and Watford since becoming a Premier League manager in January 2017, Marco Silva has only won four games fewer (12) than Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho (16) in this period. Richarlison has been involved in seven goals in his last eight Premier League appearances for Watford (four goals, three assists). Romelu Lukaku could make his 200th Premier League appearance in this match – he currently has 93 goals. Only 10 players have scored more goals than this in their opening 200 appearances in the competition, with Alan Shearer (145) leading the way. Lukaku scored seven goals in his first seven Premier League games for Manchester United, converting 23% of his shots. In his six league apps since then, he’s scored only once for the club and converted 6% of shots. QEII Redevelopment Plan to Better Connect Care for Nova Scotians

This project is now in the detailed design phase. enhancing and expanding the Nova Scotia Cancer Centre performing more surgeries by re-opening a second operating room at Hants Community Hospital in Windsor and explore using Scotia Surgery services more Government and Nova Scotia Health Authority announced plans today, April 21, to address the aging Victoria General Hospital (VG) site of the QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax. The health authority, along with Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal, provided an update on work completed to date and plans moving forward. “We know the healthier Nova Scotians are, the stronger our communities and our economy will become,” said Premier Stephen McNeil. “We want a health system that better connects Nova Scotians to the care they need. “This plan will improve access to care and over time reduce waits.” Services will gradually be moved out of the Centennial and Victoria buildings to locations that will improve access to health care. “Our plans give us the opportunity to design safe, quality environments for patients, families, physicians, staff and volunteers for generations,” said Janet Knox, president and CEO of Nova Scotia Health Authority. “We will enhance services and supports — from the most basic care to the most specialized –- that are based on the needs of Nova Scotians. “Nova Scotians will receive the right care at the right time.” Some of the changes will include: This is a complex undertaking with many parts. The goal is to complete this work while causing the least amount of disruption to care. The overall project timeline is between five and seven years; however, services will begin to be relocated in late 2016. The overall cost estimate will be determined once additional planning stages are complete. The renovations and expansion at the Dartmouth General Hospital will cost between $132 million and $138 million. Government is taking the one-time revenue bump of $110.3 million from the convention centre in Halifax and putting it toward its debt. This gives government greater fiscal capacity to address the aging VG site. Also in this year’s budget is $3.7 million in capital grants toward the project. There will be opportunities for health providers and employees, physicians, patients and the public to stay informed and engaged with regular project updates, public information sessions, and online at http://QE2redevelopment.ca .last_img read more
