Not in the national interest

first_imgThe passage of the National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill in the Lok Sabha on July 29, 2019, will always be a black day in India’s healthcare history. No doubt the Medical Council of India (MCI) had lost its credibility, more so after the exposure of corrupt practices by its then-president Dr Ketan Desai. There were several reports of the connivance of some higher-ups in the medical council with the private medical colleges. This had caused disenchantment among the concerned persons in the medical fraternity and civil society, who had demanded to revamp the body. They had also submitted suggestions to the government on this point. There was a need to take effective measures to correct the wrongdoings in the medical council. But the NMC tabled in Parliament and passed in a hush-hush manner is fraught with several negative implications in the coming period. Also Read – A special kind of bondThe MCI was essentially a democratic body with representatives from medical fraternity through elections as well as representation from various state bodies. The National Medical Commission, on the other hand, has 80 per cent appointed members with no space for democracy. They are likely to be puppets of the government in future. Any decision of the NMC could be thwarted by the government. This is killing the autonomy of such a prestigious constitutional institution as has been done with several other organisations in the recent past. The NMC is totally bureaucratised and centralised body with powers to forcefully implement regulations in the states without considering the interests of the state. This will kill the concept of federalism of the country. Also Read – Insider threat managementThe whole exercise is to give free hand to the private sector in medical education because the government will have fee regulation of only 50 per cent seats. Rest would be left to whims of the management of the private medical institutions. The central government will reserve the right to grant permission to the medical colleges without minimum requirements not considering the opinion of the NMC. Another totally unwanted clause is the introduction of the National Exit Test (NEXT) for the MBBS graduates form medical colleges in India. This will put those students who have cleared the MBBS exam to unnecessary burden before getting a license to practice. Graduates who have already cleared the exam are denied to sit for the second attempt to get PG seat. Moreover, no second chance to improve marks to get a better PG seat for those who are yet to take the final year exam will be allowed. Marks of one time will be criteria for PG admission lifelong. Since the NEXT will be clubbed with Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE), chances of Indian graduates getting PG seat will be reduced manifold. The clause of compulsory meetings with councils of AYUSH to develop an interdisciplinary curriculum is nothing short of moving towards bridge course. The parallel entry to practice modern medicine via a new cadre of community health workers will bring down the standard of healthcare and lead to undesirable practices. Foreign citizens will be allowed to practice in India without any conditions, regulations or license. This, in the long run, will put our population at risk through the involvement of various multinational pharmaceutical companies. There were many expectations as the health minister is a doctor himself. Passage of such a bill under his nose raises finger as to the ideology working behind. This bill has to be opposed tooth and nail with an appeal to the parliamentarians in the Rajya Sabha not to toe the party line but to keep eyes open in the wider interest of the countrymen. Juventus at the same level as the best Marcello Lippi

This crossover-that-looks-like-a-truck provides a better ride than a traditional pickup and gets an awesome lockable trunk right in the floor of the bed. And it doesn’t do the truck stuff too badly, either, as it’s able to carry 1,860 pounds of payload and tow 3,500 pounds. The Ridgeline is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 good for 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. That is channeled through a six-speed automatic transmission with available all-wheel drive. It’s built in Lincoln, Alabama. Honda OdysseyThe feature-rich Honda Odyssey minivan also retains its number-two slot from last year’s list. While the 2019 model doesn’t see any changes from last, it’s still a darn good choice for families on the go with reconfigurable seats, Wi-Fi and an excellent rear-seat entertainment system. Jeep With high trade tensions looming and increasing talk of tariffs, more and more consumers are looking to buy American. Cars.com has released its annual American Made Index, showcasing companies that use the most American-sourced parts and labor in their vehicles. The results may surprise you.Cars.com analyzed more than 100 US-built vehicles for five key data points: manufacturing location, parts sourcing, US employment, engine sourcing and transmission sourcing. You might think something like the Ford F-150 would top the list, but it drops from its No. 5 spot for 2018 and out of the top 10 completely. Even the first-place holder, the Jeep Cherokee, is a pretty global product. It’s a Jeep, sure, but that brand is part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, an Italian-owned business.Cars.com surveyed 1,000 people and found that half are concerned about automotive import tariffs, with 41% saying they are unsure if tariffs would make them more likely to buy American. Either way, we’re big fans of all the vehicles on this list. These days, buying American doesn’t necessarily mean sticking with a US-based automaker. 52 Photos General Motors Chevrolet Honda Jeep Acura 2019 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison: An off-road animal Post a comment Acura RDXThe third-generation Acura RDX squeaks into the top ten list with larger proportions, plenty of interior space and better handling than its predecessor. Concept Cars Electric Cars Classic Cars Enlarge ImageIt’s just so cute! Renault It’s always nice to see an automaker giving an old car a breath of 21st-century air. For the 10th anniversary of 4L International, a festival dedicated to Renault’s first front-wheel-drive family car, the French OEM borrowed from its current stable to create a very interesting one-off.Renault this week unveiled the e-Plein Air, an electric take on the automaker’s doorless, open-top runabout. The e-Plein Air is the creation of Renault Classic, Renault Design and Melun Rétro Passion, which sells parts and accessories for older vehicles. The result is something that looks just as beach-ready as the day it debuted. The automaker didn’t give out too many details, but it did say that the e-Plein Air borrows its EV underpinnings from the Renault Twizy two-seater. Its 6.1-kWh battery only offers about 62 miles of range in the Twizy. Since we’re unsure how close the e-Plein Air comes to the Twizy’s 992-pound curb weight, it’s unclear if this concept will get better or worse mileage than the quadricycle.Nevertheless, it’s a sharp little thing. The exterior isn’t exactly the same as the usual Plein Air variant of 4L; there’s some new livery along the lower body panels, and there’s a much more modern grille up front. The interior gets a new set of seats, a cute little picnic basket in the back and a digital display that lets the driver monitor not only speed, but battery capacity, too. While I can’t imagine that Renault would actually craft a small-batch run of these diminutive beach-combing EVs, I suppose there’s nothing stopping a Plein Air owner from going out, buying a Twizy and hacking together their own custom electric creation. last_img read more

IT companies doing away with weekend concept offer midweek break

first_imgThe weekend concept, borrowed from the West by many Indian IT companies, is gradually a witnessing a change, as some IT companies in Bengaluru have started giving mid-week break to employees to enable them overcome stress. Some top IT firms in the city are now adopting “staggered format”, in which weekend holidays on Saturdays and Sundays are split to a mid-week holiday and a holiday on Sunday. The idea of breaking up the weekend for the vast IT workforce in the city is expected to result in less traffic on roads and save time for commuters. Many IT firms in Manyata Tech Park, Whitefield and International Tech Park Bangalore (ITPB) have already moved from the weekend concept to a staggered format, according to the city’s Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) MA Saleem.”We are also encouraging the same and campaigning for a midweek break so that work hours can be divided. This in turn will lead to lesser office commuters on the road and manageable traffic even on a weekday or during peak hours,” The Economic Times quoted Saleem as saying.Anurag Patel, a senior HR executive at a Whitefield-based IT firm, is in favour of shifting to the new concept.”Working constantly through five days in very high-pressure jobs in the IT industry is not feasible anymore. Employees are burning out even before the week ends. So a midweek break is definitely a good practice,” he said.According to Srinath R, an employee of Atos India, who also supports the new concept, said that a holiday in the middle of the week will assist in raising the overall productivity levels of the workforce.Minacs, a US-based BPO firm, has already put in place the new concept for its employees which allows them to take holiday on a Wednesday or a Thursday, with Sunday being the weekend holiday.”Most of us are accepting and enjoying the midweek break concept as it gives us a chance to recharge and refresh,” said S Amrutha, an employee at Minacs.Netdata and Iron Mountain India are the other companies following the new concept.last_img read more

London tower block fire What we know

first_imgAt least 12 people were killed in a massive blaze that engulfed a London tower block on Wednesday, raising serious questions about fire safety in Britain’s housing blocks. Here is what we know so far:How many victims? The police have said at least 12 people were killed at Grenfell Tower in west London and they expect the number to rise as emergency workers make their way through the building.”Sadly I don’t anticipate that there will be further survivors,” Metropolitan Police commander Stuart Cundy said in a televised address. The London Ambulance Service said it had treated 69 patients, 18 of whom remained in critical condition by Wednesday afternoon. The 24-storey tower is home to between 600 and 800 residents and has one stairway through which people could escape, locals told AFP.London Mayor Sadiq Khan said firefighters were only able to reach the 12th floor of the 24-storey block at the height of the blaze.More than 200 firefighters were deployed to put out the fire. Some 100 medics tended the casualties. What happened?Fire services said they received the first call at 00:54 am on Wednesday (2354 GMT Tuesday) and were on scene at the Grenfell Tower public housing complex within six minutes.Witnesses reported the entire building was on fire by around 2:00 am (0100 GMT). Around an hour later the London Fire Brigade also tweeted that the whole building was in flames, starting from the second floor.Survivors said they saw the flames outside their windows, rising up the exterior of the building, which had recently been covered in cladding during a major refurbishment finished last year.”It appears that the external cladding has significantly contributed to the spread of fire,” said Angus Law from the BRE Centre for Fire Safety Engineering at the University of Edinburgh.Where was the fire?Grenfell Tower is a concrete block built in 1974 in the working-class area of north Kensington in west London. The £8.7 million (9.9 million euro, $11 million) refurbishment of the block was completed last year and included new windows and heating system. The area neighbours the wealthy district of Notting Hill. What were residents’ concerns?Construction firm Rydon, which completed the refurbishment of the tower in 2016, said the work “met all required building control, fire regulation and health and safety standards”.David Collins, former chairman of the Grenfell Tower Residents’ Association, said the building’s management had failed to listen to residents’ calls for improvements on fire safety.”If the same concerns were had in a wealthy part of Kensington and Chelsea they would have got resolved, but here they didn’t get resolved,” Collins told AFP.”This is a multi-ethnic, multicultural, diverse community that just didn’t get served by the people representing them,” he said.Local residents had warned a year ago about a potential fire risk caused by rubbish being allowed to accumulate during the refurbishment.”This matter is of particular concern as there is only one entry and exit to Grenfell Tower during the improvement works,” read a blog post by the Grenfell Action Group.”The potential for a fire to break out in the communal area on the walkway does not bear thinking about as residents would be trapped in the building with no way out,” it said. Some residents said the official advice was that people should stay inside in the event of a fire.Khan said the advice would be looked into.”We can’t have is a situation (where) people’s safety is put at risk because of bad advice being given or if it is the case, as it’s been alleged, of tower blocks not being properly serviced and maintained,” he told the BBC.British Prime Minister Theresa May’s new chief of staff Gavin Barwell, a former housing minister, promised a review of building regulations covering fire safety following a fatal 2009 fire in another London local authority apartment block. The review has not been published.last_img read more

Houston Tests Its Preparedness for A Cyberattack

first_img The simulation, called “Jack Voltaic 2.0,” includes two simultaneous incidents: a natural disaster and a cyberattack. Mayor Sylvester Turner said, “The exercise will allow us to examine the challenges those incidents place on critical infrastructure, while assessing response capability, agency collaboration, communication interoperability, and military integration.”The city is running the simulation at the Houston Emergency Center. In addition to Houston’s city government and the military, the exercise includes representatives from public utilities, the energy sector, healthcare, transportation, telecommunications, and education.  The exercise comes in the wake of a number of high-profile cyberattacks on major U.S. cities. In March, a ransomware attack crippled Atlanta’s city network for five days. A similar attack shut down Baltimore’s 911 dispatch system later that month. The original Jack Voltaic, which ran in 2016, tested how well New York City would respond to a cyberattack on its critical infrastructure.
