Message from the Mayor of Bayonne Improving our parks

first_imgThis year, we will carry out Phase II of planned improvements at Collins Park, which is located between 1st Street and the Kill Van Kull.  Improvements will include new basketball courts, playgrounds, and handicapped entrances.  We will also reconstruct the parking lot.  During the winter and early spring, an environmental remediation will take place in portions of Collins Park. This work must be done before the park improvements can be started. An earlier phase of the environmental work removed soil that contained chromium and other elements that were used as fill in the 20th century.  Clean replacement soil will be added to the park. Due to the environmental project and later construction activities, parts of Collins Park will be closed temporarily as needed.Fitzpatrick Park, which is located on Avenue C between 26th and 27th Streets, will be reconstructed.  We will upgrade the water park features, and install new swings and other playground equipment. We plan to refurbish 28th Street Park, which is located on Avenue F.  During 2019, we developed a concept plan and started work on new designs for the park.  We also prepared concept plans for Russell Golding Park (on upper Avenue E), Cottage Street Park (at Cottage Street and Hobart Avenue), and Dr. David Morris Park (at 47th Street and Broadway). We have already applied successfully for grants from the New Jersey Green Acres Program and the Hudson County Open Space Fund to cover more than one million dollars in park improvements.  We will continue to apply for additional funding this year to help complete more park improvements.Bayonne’s municipal parks and the Hudson County Stephen R. Gregg-Bayonne Park are great features of our community.  They help attract new residents to Bayonne. Our parks must continue to be great places for relaxation and recreation. Since I became mayor in 2014, upgrading our municipal park system has been a major accomplishment of my administration.  We will be taking important steps during 2020 to improve Mayor Dennis P. Collins Park, Mayor Francis G. Fitzpatrick Park, 28th Street Park, Dr. David Morris Park, Russell Golding Park, and Cottage Street Park.We completed Phase I of the improvements to Collins Park in 2018.  Highlights of Phase I included new playground and exercise equipment, renovated tennis courts, a new volleyball court, new dog parks, and new trees and benches, among other improvements. ×last_img
