“Y no asustarse. Habrá cambios, pero podemos resolverlos juntos y salir fortalecidos”.– Richelle Thompson es subdirectora y gerente editorial de Forward Movement. UFC faces Eminem curse; fan creates compelling theory to prove it

first_img MMA fighters, who often use music by Eminem for walkouts, are supposedly destined to lose their fights. An MMA fan has decided to put together a record of all the fighters who walked out to Eminem songs and lost their bouts. This was an attempt to prove that the Eminem curse is real in MMA. The spreadsheet has a total of 188 entries recorded till date and it keeps an account of all the fighters who have used Eminem’s music. 9 months ago UFC: Jorge Masvidal excites fans by challenging Floyd Mayweather for a 2020 fight SUBSCRIBE TO US COMMENT FOLLOW US 9 months ago UFC: Logan Paul is interested to fight in UFC; wants to face Conor McGregor 9 months ago UFC: Nick Diaz plots revenge against Jorge Masvidal in 2020, begins preparing furiously The Eminem curse runs wild on UFC fightersThe sheet has been created by a fan named Jei who has explained the Eminem MMA curse in great detail on his forum. Inside Conditions…Bad timing

This offseason, Big Ben is taking no chances with his long-term health and ability to stay on the field for a full 16-game season. [Last]Wednesday, Roethlisberger underwent minor surgery to have some discomfort in his right knee taken care of, a move that is not expected to keep him off his feet when training camp begins later this summer. On the day of the surgery Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin also tweeted that, “Ben Roethlisberger had minor surgery on his right knee that was the result of slight discomfort this offseason.” I am not getting it but with Pittsburgh being in an almost “rebuilding year” and with this procedure being so “minor,” then why wasn’t it performed (the procedure) immediately after the 2012 season ended so that Roethlisberger could have been ready for mini-camp, scheduled for June 11-13, 2013? As far as the eye can see on the brightest side of this scenario, the timing seems to be a bit on the shady side. Hey, don’t want to attend or go through mini-camp its simple have minor surgery just prior to mini-camp. With the Steelers having to deal with major personnel changes on offense as well as the team continuing the process of adjusting to a fairly new offensive coordinator then why wouldn’t everyone be eager to attend mini-camp, beni-camp or any camp just to make sure that everyone was on the same page and to also have a leg up in the “gory blood and guts” AFC North. According to a story by ESPN.com’s Jamison Hensley, “when Baltimore Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs was asked about Roethlisberger’s minor knee surgery Suggs told the NFL Network: “You know, it just isn’t the same game when the two teams don’t have all their parts playing. So you’re absolutely right, I do wish him well and I hope for him to have a speedy recovery.” Suggs finished the last line with a big grin, which certainly leaves his comments open to interpretation because from 2004 to 2011, Suggs sacked Roethlisberger 15.5 times, which is more than any other NFL defender during that time.”When you have a defender wishing you well because it possibly increases his chance of sending you to hell that is bad, really bad. Big Ben through all of his success and glory still has not gotten rid of some rookie and novice tendencies the biggest still being; he continues to hold onto the ball for far too long. When you grip the ball for too long only three things can happen and they are all bad.1. Just like in real estate when they say location, location, location, in football when you fail to get rid of the football in three seconds or less then sack, sack, sack is the catchphrase for the day.2. Pick, pick, pick. And I am not referring to the “pick six lottery” or any other game of chance but any quarterback takes a gargantuan chance when they launch the ball after three and one half seconds. Why? Well now you have given the defensive back a chance to read and diagnose the play even if he has to read Braille to do it and most slow developing plays, especially pass plays do not normally bode well for the offense and coupled with the Steelers questionable O-line, well as Charlie Chan used to say, “things could very well get a bit tricky.” 3. The “guillotine syndrome.” According to history guillotines were used as execution instruments and really became popular during the French revolution. The wealthy and upper crust were relieved of their “noggins” rather unceremoniously. Well, when an NFL quarterback is stressed and has to rush his delivery the pass may bounce harmfully off the turf or may sail just high enough that the outstretched arms of the intended receiver may just be the last photo taken of him before he is relieved of his cranium and all of the contents within. There is no time for slacking and B’s-ing. The Steelers are in a dogfight in the AFC North and contrary to popular belief they have a chance to win a championship but they have to play all of their cards right. There can be no false posturing and chest thumping. Bluffing and false moves will be exposed instantly and the consequences will be dire and swift. There are no weak teams in the Steelers division. From a roster perspective every team in the AFC North has a legitimate shot at winning the division title so every division game will be a potential season breaker. See folks the AFC North is so strong there may be two even three teams that may earn wild card berths. They can ill afford to lose any game during the upcoming season because two of their member teams in the AFC North, the Cleveland Browns and the Cincinnati Bengals, have made major and vital upgrades to their rosters and seem to be “primed for bear.” There is virtually no room for error if the Steelers are going to make a run for a Lombardi Trophy. One of the positive things that they have done is sign their first and second round draft picks linebacker Jarvis Jones and running back Le’Veon Bell early, therefore eliminating distractions among a very young team prior to mini-camp and training camp. Big Ben had better begin to perform to justify the money that the Steelers have forked out because time keeps on slippin’, slippin’, slippin’ into his and the Steelers future. If the “franchise” quarterback label that they have hung around his neck is for real then he had better live up to the hype because the last time I checked, “the guillotine has no kin.”(Aubrey Bruce can be reached at: [email protected]pittsburghcourier.com or 412-583-6741.)last_img read more

R160m home for National Library

first_img13 December 2004Queuing to gain access to South Africa’s National Library will be a thing of the past when a state-of-the-art R160-million building opens in Pretoria’s city centre in 2007.The library will become the focal point of a Government Boulevard linking new government buildings and other historic sites with the Union Buildings, and form part of the rejuvenation of downtown Pretoria.Construction on the four-storey, 2 700 square metre building will start in January 2005 and is due to be completed in 2007.The new facility will feature a raised public piazza leading to its entrance, steel and glass covered walkways and ramps, double-volume reading rooms with views onto the streets, and conveyer belts linking the different sections to ease the movement of books.Architect Jeremie Malan told Business Day that the design of the building would allow 60% of the space to be used as book stack rooms “with the best air-conditioning systems, keeping temperatures at an optimal 18 degrees Celcius and 40%-50% humidity”.Speaking at a sod-turning ceremony on 3 December, Arts and Culture Minister Pallo Jordan said the modern glass-and-brick building would reflect the dynamic future of the National Library of South Africa.“The National Library building will add a new and exciting dimension to the capital of South Africa, while revitalising the CBD and providing a much-needed investment of capital, human resources and future activity”, Jordan said. The National Library came into existence through the merger in 1999 of the former state library in Pretoria and the former South African library in Cape Town. The new Pretoria branch will provide approximately 1 800 seats compared to the 130 presently offered by the existing facility. The National Library is the custodian of the country’s documentary heritage, receiving – in terms of the Legal Deposit Act – a copy of every book, magazine, newspaper, government document and any other document published in South Africa. The library has a collection of over three million items from legal deposits, donations, and exchange agreements, and is a primary resource for researchers, writers, students and the general public. The new building is expected to store over 3.5-million documents over the next 20 years.“This will be the largest and most modern library on the continent”, said National Librarion John Tsebe.SouthAfrica.info reporter Want to use this article in your publication or on your website?See: Using SAinfo materiallast_img read more

Eskom buys power from private producer

first_imgThe company also revealed that it is in negotiations with potential South African lenders for a refinancing of up to US$20-million (about R148-million) of its own inter-company funding of the Newcastle plant. The loan facility was secured from the Sterling Trust Limited, a UK-based private investment company, and is repayable within 90 days of drawdown. According to Ipsa, the loan will be repaid out of the revenues received at the Newcastle plant. “The last year was a period of continued difficulty in the South African power industry as Eskom struggled to re-arrange its finances and to meet its obligation to sign contracts with independent power producers for the provision of privately generated electricity,” said Ipsa chairman Richard Linnell. According to the company, the plant is expected to generate electricity for nine days toward the end of the month, subject to obtaining the necessary approvals for the loan. In the meantime, the plant has continued to incur both direct costs of employing staff as well as rent, rates, rates and gas supply liabilities of a normal, fully constructed power plant. “I am pleased that our Newcastle plant can be brought into operation so quickly in order to make a small contribution towards relieving the strain on the South African electricity system at this critical time,” Ipsa CEO Peter Earle said in a statement last week. The company’s Newcastle plant is the first Independent Power Producer (IPP) plant to be built in South Africa, but has been lying idle as Eskom had yet to finalise power purchase agreements with any independent producers. Local refinancing Ipsa, which is listed on London’s AIM and the JSE’s AltX markets, also announced the arrangement of a short-term loan facility of £300 000 (about R3.3-million) to restart generation at its gas-fired power plant in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal. London-listed power producer Ipsa has concluded a short-term agreement to sell electricity – generated at its plant in KwaZulu-Natal – to South African state company Eskom for the remainder of the month of June. 21 June 2010last_img read more

SA hotels on ‘world’s best service’ list

first_img27 May 2013 Three Cape Town hotels have made it onto the “World’s Best Service” list in the Africa and Middle East category in an international survey by the US edition of Travel and Leisure released in the magazine’s June 2013 issue. The Twelve Apostles Hotel & Spa took top spot, while the Cape Grace and the One & Only took second and fourth respectively. The best service category of the magazine’s annual “World Best Awards” survey aims to recognise the best hotels, resorts, airlines and cruise liners around the world as rated by its readers. “Excellent service is a definitive factor in repeat visits by overseas travellers,” Western Cape Finance, Economic Development and Tourism Minister Alan Winde said in a statement last week.‘Consistently striving for best service’ “I hope these awards serve as an inspiration to the Western Cape hospitality industry to consistently strive for the highest service levels. “I am also confident these awards will encourage more international visitors to our world-class destination,” Winde said. Johannesburg’s Saxon Boutique Hotel, Villas & Spa also featured on the best service list in the Africa and the Middle East category, scoring the same as the One & Only. Singita Kruger National Park and Singita Sabi Sand also made their way onto the list, coming in at second and fifth respectively in the resorts and lodges category. The overall results for best service were reached by surveying the general managers at the top 16 hotels in each region. According to the results of this survey: 44% of general managers admit to using Google and Facebook to research guests prior to check-in; 31% ensure each guest is personally greeted by a manager upon arrival; 50% have a staff-to-guest ratio of at least 1.5 to 1; and 56% offer room service 24 hours a day. Separately, Cape Town was last week ranked 16th in TripAdvisor’s Traveler’s Choice 2013 top 25 destinations in the world. TripAdvisor is the world’s largest travel website, and their Travelers’ Choice awards are based on millions of reviews posted by reader through the course of the previous year. The Platters Invite People To Pledge For Peace With New EP

first_imgRock and Roll, Vocal Group and Grammy Halls of Fame international recording artists The Platters are drawing on their historic roots to record a special EP produced by, for and with the people of America to support – and more importantly to promote – harmony, justice and peace in communities during these tense times in America. In association with PledgeMusic, a pioneer in the direct-to-fan platform that combines the experience of buying music and supporting a favorite artist into a more personal experience, The Platters will lead the People’s Recording; a six-track EP containing messages of hope, optimism and peace through song.People from all sectors of society are invited to Pledge for Peace with The Platters, in effect, taking on the role of executive producers of the project. Pledgers even will have the opportunity to perform on the recording as part of The People’s Chorus. The EP will be titled E-Peace: America in Harmony!, and will feature six tracks. It will include an original song written by The Platters Music Director Michael Larson, “The Love You Gave Me,” and new recordings in The Platters retro-contemporary style comprised of “Someday” (All-4-One), “Imagine” (John Lennon), “People Get Ready” (Curtis Mayfield) and “Amazing Grace” (Traditional), in addition to a secret bonus track, to be announced later this summer. The track, “The Love You Gave Me”, will be sung by a multi-racial/multi-ethnic group of children from various youth choirs in Massachusetts.100 percent of net money raised with the people’s pledges will support the recording and fund the 2015 Liberty Grant in Honor of Justice Anthony M. Kennedy to be entrusted to the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (MSPCC). This grant will be used for programs that provide mental health counseling for children and foster families, facilitate adoptions, find forever families for biological children that cannot return home, advocate for laws that protect children from physical and sexual abuse and provide education to single parents to help them reach career goals and become productive members our communities. The grant is named in honor of United States Supreme Court Associate Justice Anthony M. Kennedy who has long been a forward-looking thought leader and champion of liberty and equality for all Americans. In 1996, during a speech to Stanford law students, Justice Kennedy said, “Other countries are very concerned about the state of civility in our society and the order or disorder our criminal justice system presents.” An observation he made well before the current reported incidents of excessive force within some police departments that have sparked, at times, violent, racial unrest reminiscent of the civil rights era.Pledgers have the opportunity to take ownership and sign on as an executive producer on this project by contributing via the Pledge Music website. There are incentives for all levels of participants. Pledgers will have the opportunity to get signed CDs, a live CD of the group’s first recording in 50 years, Back to Basics with The Platters LIVE!, a signed set list, a custom voice mail message, a Skype vocal lesson from one of The Platters, a surprise phone call to someone they love, a Skype serenade, dinner for two with The Platters (includes two signed E-Peace CDs), a home performance (includes signed E-Peace CD), the opportunity to sing on E-Peace as part of The People’s Chorus (includes signed E-Peace CD), their name in the liner notes (includes signed E-Peace CD), a picture of the original members of The Platters, signed by founder Herb Reed, an E-Peace live in-studio visit (includes signed E-Peace CD), a VIP concert package for two, which includes two tickets to a U.S. concert of choice, a meet and greet with the band, U.S. airfare if applicable and more. To pledge, please visit www.pledgemusic.com/theplatters.“The Platters were at the nexus of music and social change during the ’50s and ’60s. Shouldering that legacy, it is only fitting that they would once again offer their voice as a bridge toward harmony, justice and peace. PledgeMusic stands by them with this unifying message,” said Jayce Varden, PledgeMusic Co-founder & Head of Global Campaign Operations.last_img read more
